Artist Diane Mahood of Whale Tail Creations
Diane Mahood is the artist behind the jewelry designs of Whale Tail Creations.
She lives and works from her North Vancouver home and studio, located along the
banks of Lynn Canyon headwaters. Diane’s designs of silver and semi-precious
stone are inspired by the natural world, the creative spirit of her father and
her First Nations heritage.
Diane’s fascination with BC coastal waters and the sudden and sometimes
violent changes in weather and landscape inspires many of her pieces. Her silver-stamping
techniques take on the movement and textures of water and sand. She uses wire
wrapping to capture whirlpools of semi-precious stones in aqua blues and seaweed
greens. She uses hot and cold fusion to link concentric silver ripples into
bracelets and necklaces.
Occasionally the staggered shape of the traditional native headdress, the
rounded crest of a wave or the curved line of a whale’s tail finds its way into
the shape and symmetry of Diane’s collared beadwork.
Diane’s participation at the 2008 Burning Man Art Festival, Black Rock Desert,
Nevada inspired a whole new collection. Warm continuous hues, in snake skin lace-jasper
and maple wood beads, blend with lofty blues of peruvian opals, in reminiscence
of a desert spilling into caramel hills and empty sky.
Under the name ‘Whale Tail Creations’, Diane’s bead jewelry is displayed and
sold in the well-known Shorewind Gallery of Tofino, BC.
