'I love this stone.  It was formed about 150 million years ago, and is not part of the original earth's crust but the transformed skeletons of ancient coral reefs and sea creatures.  It is not too hard to be carved with the proper diamond tools, but hard enough to be touchable and to take a natural polish which will last a very long time.'

Jeff Edwards has been carving since he was a child, moving from wood to marble several years ago. He grew up in the village of Ucluelet, and has had a long career as a fisherman. His close ties to the ocean and the wilderness of the west coast have been an inspiration in his sculpture. Most of the marble for his work he finds in the nearby mountains, often one at a time.

'I do try to put myself into my work and to emphasize our bond as humans to the world and creatures around us.  Hopefully to the viewer, the sculpture is a link to that circle.'
