Pacific Sunrise

Ron Smid
A passion for light and land coupled with intense personal
vision is the formula behind the extraordinary nature photography
of Ron Smid. Inspired by the work of great landscape photographers
of past and present, Smid set out in his early twenties to forge
his own unique photographic style with the wild expanse of Canada
as his canvas.
What started with weekend canoe excursions to the Canadian
Shield of Northern Ontario, eventually led to multiple
cross-Canada expeditions. Driven to pursue photography full time,
the self-taught nature photographer left his job at an automotive
assembly plant to undertake his first photographic journey across
Canada in 1999. The life changing experience took him as far north
as Inuvik, Northwest Territories, and as far west as Vancouver
Island where he now resides. Since then, Smid has explored and
photographed within every province in Canada capturing an
incredible array of imagery on traditional transparency film.
Smid’s vivid nature images have graced magazines, environmental
campaigns, books, fine art posters and his best selling annual
Canadian wall calendar. His remarkable landscape photography
continues to captivate an increasing international audience, year
after year.

Frank
Armich

Frank Armich was born on
Vancouver Island. As a young apprentice in his father's
business of producing burl wood furniture and clocks, Frank quickly
developed a keen attraction to the inherent beauty of local woods:
Bird's Eye Maple, Red and Yellow Cedar, Fir. Today he creates by
hand an extensive line of artistic sculptures such as mirrors,
mystical trees, bowls, whales and wall pieces, out of these woods.
Frank also uses a variety of roots to create on-of-a-kind chairs,
tables, lamps and beds...and houses built out of driftwood. In
addition, he enjoys crafting silver-plated, whimsical wind chimes.
He has exhibited across Vancouver Island and throughout North
America.

Brian
Street

Brian was
born of missionary parents in China in 1946 and spent his first nine
years in Asia. The remainder of his youth was in Alberta in a
country setting near the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. It
was here that he spent a lot of time in the outdoors and at an early
age he was influenced by his natural surroundings. Brian
studied Photography and Graphic Arts at Ryerson College in Toronto,
spent time in Alaska and the Yukon, and eventually made his home in
the Comox Valley on Vancouver Island in the mid-Seventies.
After retiring from commercial fishing, he is now devoted to wood
turning full-time.
Through his many skills and talents, along with his unique creative
flair and eye for beauty, Brian has opened new doors as a
flourishing artist. The simplicity of the lathe with the
beauty and fragility of the wood dictate the creative direction fo
the finished pieces. He especially enjoys working with
West-Coast burls (red cedar, cypress, big leaf maple and hemlock)
which show beautiful colour and grain patterns. The wood Brian
uses has been taken from the forest on Vancouver Island over the
past 40 years. This diminishing and precious resource should
be treated with respect, as he believes these burls are slowly
becoming an endangered species. Brian's art is owned by
individuals and collectors internationally who share his love affair
with wood. His art can be seen in galleries throughout Alberta
and BC.

David
Parks

About the Carver...
Decoy carving is the self-taught occupation of David Parks that
began in the mid 1980's as a hobby. This pursuit has now
developed into his business that occupies much of his time.
Long-billed curlews are David's favourite bird, having grown up
with them in his native Ireland. You will find many different
culew styles in his appropriately name "The Curlew Workshop".
Some are of his won design while others are in the tradition of the
early carvers who made curlew decoys. In fact, David relies on
the styles of the early traditions and much research goes into the
making of each of his decoys so that they replicate the originals as
closely as possible.
Hand carving shorebird decoys gives David great satisfaction as the
image emerges from the wood. These decoys are highly
imaginative works of art and represent a by-gone era.

Honica Zylstra Designs
Honica’s
jewellery designs are the joyful outpouring of a unique vision that
is fuelled by experimentation and experience.
As former head of design for Purple Cat
Jewellery, her work was sold in the USA through Saks Fifth Avenue,
as well as other select boutiques and galleries.
Made for you by hand…no molds or mass
production used here. Honica works each metal piece, each spiral,
each stone, individually. A single metal component may undergo
eight individual hand processed before it is ready to be featured in
the finished composition. Metals and stones may be tumbled,
patinaed, polished, forged, antiqued, acid-dipped, melted, molded,
bleached, brushed, sanded…well, you get the idea!
Each jewellery collection features the
development of new processed, new methods and new materials.
Each piece of jewellery is an original design.
Each one made for you by hand.
Honica has studied design all her life.
She was born in the Netherlands and comes from
several generations of professional artists whose disciplines
include fashion design, painting, pottery, and art restoration.
Her own career spans thirty years of painting,
sculpture, theatrical costuming, quilting, weaving, fashion and, for
the last fifteen years, jewellery design.
Working from her rural studio on the west coast
of Canada, she continues to produce unusual collections of art
jewellery.
Her
lifelong fascination with natural materials has led her to develop
diverse designs featuring semi-precious stones, glass, minerals and
fossils, together with hand-worked sterling, brass and copper.

Wren
Silverworks

Wren Silverworks – Stuart Duncan
Individually engraved sterling silver jewellery
The Process: Creating and engraved sterling silver piece of
jewellery is started by sawing out a rough shape fo the design
from the flat sheet of silver. This is then prepolished, and the
planned design is drawn onto it. Next, the silver is engraved
along the design lines, using a variety of gravers. Using th saw,
the silver is cut out again, this time following the periphery of
the design as well as any pieces to cut out inside the design.
The edges are filed to a smooth finish. The piece is then shaped:
this involves hammering the silver into a precarved shaping “hole”
to give the flat silver gentle curves. In the case of a brooch, a
clasp is then soldered onto the back, and this is followed by a
polish with a Tripoli compound. The silver is then washed in an
ultrasonic washer dried polished with rouge and washed again.
Stuart Duncan – the Artist: As a child, I was always drawing,
deriving inspiration from the natural world around me. My ability
to depict the world through the use of realistic lines led me into
a career as an illustrator. Later, it inspired me to produce
a line of jewelery that marries realism to silver. I live on
12 acres of the Pacific Northwest forest filled with birds,
animals and ponds, so I only need to open the front door or
look out the window to see deer, ravens, shooting stars, slugs,
juncos or hummingbirds. I believe that when we look at the
colours and lines of a bird, the beautiful shape of a plant, or
the movement of a deer, we recognize within us the beauty and
strength of the natural world. It is important to remember
that we are also a part of it. I believe it is important to
celebrate the natural world around us, because even though we try
to dominate it, it is so often forgotten that we are also a part
of it.
