Background
Carolyn has lived most of her life along the North West Coast from
California, Oregon and Washington to Vancouver, British Columbia
(less a two year stint in Montreal, Quebec).
Her educational background includes attending the Instituto Allende
Art School in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, as well as obtaining a
Bachelor of Arts degree in pre-Columbian art history and a Master of
Arts degree in social science research, both from the University of
British Columbia. This led to nearly a decade of work as a Clinical
Research Coordinator and Insomnia Counselor at the Sleep Disorders
Program, Vancouver Hospital, University of B.C.
For the past seven years she has made her home on thirteen acres of
coastal forest and green mossy bluffs on Texada Island, near Powell
River, B.C. Here she has returned to her art roots, depicting
animals, birds and fish through a variety of media including carved
and painted wood, acrylic paintings on board and canvas, and cut-out
foil and painted sheet metal critters. She has been involved in
numerous group and solo shows of her work on the Sunshine Coast. Due
to the abundant deer population on the island, she has restricted
her passion for gardening to 192 container pots of perennial plants
on her decks.
Carolyn has a line of cards and prints of her images and sells her
work through numerous galleries. These include the Holtenwood
Gallery on Texada Island, Smithford’s folkart gallery in Qualicum
Beach, Islandfolk Art Gallery in Cumberland, Waterlily Gallery in
Ucluelet and Doctor Vigari’s Gallery on Commercial Drive in
Vancouver. Carolyn’s work has been sold to collectors across Canada,
the United States and in Hong Kong, as well as used in local
television and movie sets.
Artist Statement
I enjoy creating ‘portraits’ of animals, birds and fish in a
variety of media. My goals are to depict the amusing, playful or
unexpected nature of my subjects in a deliberately simple style. I
enjoy exploring color combinations and layering of colors and
textures.
I believe my work is an amalgamation of many influences. I admire
the sense of humour, naiveté and freedom of expression seen in
contemporary folkart from eastern Canada and the United States as
well as in the artwork of young children. The self-taught styles
known as 'outsider art' also appeal to me as do forms of expression
existing outside the accepted cultural realm of ‘fine art’. Through
my studies and travels, I have been inspired by Mexican and
Southwest art forms, images, materials and colours. Finally, my
nature-oriented lifestyle on Texada Island has allowed for daily
close-up observations of the always interesting antics of local
birds and assorted wild and farm animal life. My hope is that
through depictions of these amusing critters, I can invoke a
humourous response in the viewers of my work.

Jessica N. Lentini is a young inspiring artist who was born and
raised in a small town called Fonthill in Southern Ontario.
She was the oldest out of three siblings Jessica started taking an
interest in art at a very young age.
Her mother was also an artist and would paint while Jessica would
watch quietly behind her, picking up on every detail. After
finishing high school, she went to a nearby college to pursue a
two-year course, which resulted in a diploma for Creative Arts &
Design. Following graduation she decided to move to Tofino.
Since making the move to Tofino's
prestigious and untamed influences that have shown up in the
beautiful art she has created. Some of the work she has done
are images that are commonly experienced on the West Coast, and are
very real, and unique.

Carol Schulz

Born in Germany, shortly after World War II, Carol
immigrated to North America in the late 1950’s and has lived in
Tofino, British Columbia (Canada) since 1991. She is a citizen of
both Canada and the United States, holds advanced degrees in
Anthropology and Epidemiology/Public Heath, has taught at
university, has conducted biomedical and survey research, and has
managed world-wide projects in computer meditronics.
Although mostly self-taught in the medium of watercolour, Carol
originally studied art in Illinois (USA) over 30 years ago. She has
again taken up the brushes because of “…the remarkable natural
beauty of the Pacific Rim and Clayoquot Sound. I think the Tofino
area is one of the four most beautiful places on earth.
